Phyllis Martin

Hallett Memorial Library’s #1 Volunteer

Phyllis Martin has been an amazing volunteer at the Jessie. F. Hallett Memorial Library in Crosby, Minnesota.  To date, Phyllis has clocked over 5,000 hours at our library, and has been personally responsible for keeping all of our adult collection organized, weeded and accounted for…She has recruited several Hallett Helpers; without the help of Phyllis and her friends, I cannot imagine the state of our book shelves!  The love of the Library runs deep in Phyllis’s bones.  She is a retired elementary teacher with a passion for books and reading and a past Library Board member who is well versed in the Hallett legacy history. We are fortunate that the Hallett Library is one of the places that Phyllis has decided to hang her volunteer hat.  The world is a better place because of her efforts.  Thank you Phyllis!

Library Friends Making a Difference

By Peggi Beseres

The buzz is out.  The JFHML (Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library)
Friends Foundation, established in February 2011 with the help of a HOPStartStrong grant from the Initiative Foundation, is making a difference. Faced with a substantial decrease in funding from the Hallett Trust, the JFHML (who during this economic downturn has seen in INCREASE in demand for patron services and technology opportunities) needed to be pro-active in ensuring the sustainability of the Library for the future. By creating a membership driven Friends Foundation as a fundraising arm of the Library, and by the success of the used bookstore BACKSTREET BOOKS, the Friends (115 members to date) are well on their way. Stop in and check out the new European-flavored shoppe, which opened July 12 and has already received many positive accolades. One-of-kind repurposed book art is displayed daily, all book titles are $1-$3, and cards are available by local artists.

How does one become a Library Friend? Simply stop by the Library (101-1st St SE) and pick up a brochure, or visit our website at www.hallettlibrary.org for a downloadable application.  The JFHML FRIENDS FOUNDATION meets at the Library the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30. We have adult volunteer opportunities available, a crafting group that meets monthly (2nd Tuesdays @ 4:00), and what better Foundation to join than one which supports reading, encourages a passion for lifelong learning and offers social connections in a welcoming environment?  Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best, “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” Join us as we grow together in support of your local multi-generation cultural hub, the Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library.

New repurposed book art arrives daily.  These “Book Lamps” were created by local artist, Friend and staff member Karen Vukonich.  Lamps and lampshades are one of our bestsellers. Crafters meet at the Library monthly to create inventory for store shelving.

The Ultimate Selection in Used Books
Located in the Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library

The Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library is proud to announce the opening of Backstreet Books, a used bookstore located in the small study room on the ‘backside” of the Library. This JFHML FRIENDS FOUNDATION project was created to support the library by fundraising for special programs and materials. The store features high quality books for adults and youth, along with gift cards by local artists and repurposed book art.  This European-flavored shoppe is operated by the Friends who are always seeking new members.

How Did It Happen?
1. Take a plain study room in the back of the Library.        2. Come up with a catchy name.

3. Decide on theme (European flavor) & set décor accordingly.      4. Make (and hang) an awning

  1. 5.Transform a recycled display case.                VOILA!!

The JFHML Friends Foundation
meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month
in the meeting room
at 6:30 PM.

What is Repurposed" Book Art?

Repurposed book art is an art medium designed to recycle older books into fun and imaginative items that can be both decorative and practical.

With inspiration from titles, illustrations, and the literal shape of the book, each item is hand-crafted by a JFHML Friend to bring joy and a deep appreciation of the longevity of a books life.

We are all book-lovers at heart…..  Thank you for your support of the Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library.
